There is more that 63 carats of this georgous Blue Gem Turquoise!

This jewelry set is one of my favorites. It's cut from some beautiful blue green turquoise from the mine. I love the stately and gentle elephant and was very excited to make a beautiful set of jewelry representing one.

Would be a great gift for the elephant lover.

This set does NOT come with a chain. You will receive pendant and earrings with this order.

All my cabochons are backed in hard, black epoxy for stability and strength.

ROCK FACTS:

BLUE GEM TURQUOISE

The Blue Gem Turquoise Mine was located in the Copper Basin area southwest of Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. Production of this turquoise mine started about 1934 and continued until the 1970's. Blue Gem Turquoise is still some of the finest turquoise ever found, and unlike most turquoise mines, (in which the majority mined is chalky and only usable if stabilized) most of the turquoise found there was of gem-quality. There is a distinctive aqua color that some people associate with Blue Gem turquoise, although it produced a great variety of colors, especially when intense blue was combined with deep green in one stone. The mine no longer exists due to the extensive copper (and gold) mining operations of the Copper Canyon Mining Company (all of the copper was extracted by 1968).The Blue Gem Turquoise mine was located deep underground, accessed by tunnels as deep as 800 feet. This is of interest because the Blue Gem Turquoise Mine and the Bisbee Turquoise Mine in Bisbee, Arizona are the only two Turquoise mines (that we know of) where turquoise was found that deep in the earth. One of the rarest forms to see in Blue Gem Turquoise Jewelry is the Pyrite Variety. Pyrite-bearing quartz veins are closely associated with this turquoise although pyrite in Blue Gem Turquoise is still unusual to see. Durango Silver has some examples of this pyrite material in Turquoise Jewelry. Another interesting fact about both Blue Gem Turquoise and Bisbee Turquoise being found so deep underground as that both deposits produced some of the hardest and truest blue Turquoise ever found. There's just something about Blue Gem Turquoise. It is a treasure: a rare, valuable and historic American turquoise. When we think of Blue Gem Turquoise, we think of translucence, depth, watery, what we mean by "non-opaque, silicated" jewels. This turquoise is hard and won't change color, takes a high polish and will be beautiful one hundred years from now. The character and beauty of these stones are impossible to fully capture in images, since this turquoise has a unique character that's hard to describe. It is like pools of glassy water captured in solid form. We believe this may be some of the greatest turquoise ever mined and once you own a piece you will be addicted to Blue Gem Turquoise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Custom and personalized orders

Yes, I do custom orders! Click on the Custom Order Request link on the home page or in any one of my listings. I'll let you know if I have those stones. I have LOTS of inventory but not all of it is listed so it's very possible that I may already have what you are looking for.

With any custom request, please provide exact dimensions (length, width, thickness and shape). Pictures are encouraged and welcomed as it makes the custom cutting process much easier.

Are you cabochons made in the USA?

Yes, all my cabochons are american-made. A majority of my stones are mined in the American West--Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, etc. I cut all my stones in my home shop here in sunny Florida.

Care instructions

My stones are very sturdy. They are all backed with a hard black epoxy that increases their strength and stability, but they will crack and break if dropped on a hard surface such as tile or concrete. They are very tough when it comes to setting and bezeling them but don't play catch with them ;)

Can I request a special shape?

Yes, I can cut different shapes than those I have listed. Please click the Custom Order Rquest link on the home page or in any listing. Not everything is cuttable although I can generally make it work. I will let you know if I can do it and then give you an estimate on the project. For totally new shapes, there WILL be an additional "lapidary design fee" of $50 on the order. Sketches, drawings or pictures are encouraged. But exact dimensions are a must.

Do you do silversmithing?

No, I do not do silversmithing. I do no bezel, inlay or solder silver or gold. But I do know many fine silversmiths who would like to help you with your silversmithing needs. Message me and will provide you with some names.

Do you have more of this cabochon or in a different size?

Yes! I have a huge inventory from years of stone cutting. Not all of it is posted in my store. Often I have more than one of the cabochons you are looking for.

Since we are dealing with natural rock they will not be exactly identical in color or matrix, but I can generally get pretty close. I do however have the same shapes in many different, stones colors and sizes.

If I don't have more in stock, I can generally cut what you want but for new cuttings I require a $60 minimum order.

Just click the Custom Order Request link, explain what you want with dimensions, stone type and look and I will give you a price quote.

Can I get an individual stone made into earrings, a necklace or pendant?

Yes! I can make any of my stones into a pair of earrings or pendant. All of my shaped cabochons have this as an option for an extra fee.

If you wish to have a standard cabochon (square, oval, triangle, circle, etc.) made into jewelry, you would have to click the Custom Order Request button in the listing. I would then be able to give you a price quote.

Pair of earrings: Additional $20 (2 stones drilled with sterling silver eyehook, bail and french ear wires)

Pendant: Additional $10 (1 stone drilled with sterling silver eyehook and bail)
