8 red onyx heart cabochons
11mm x 11mm (1)
13mm x 13mm (6)
16mm x 12mm (1)
41.5 carats (combined weight)
These lovely little hearts are in good shape, and you'll see that they have fractures, yet several could be put together to make 2 - 3 pairs of earrings.
This is a different type of listing. These are what I call "seconds" as they are left over from my jewelry making. They are all stone cabochons but have minor damage to the stones such as a minor crack, missing a piece of backing, poorly cut, etc. They are still useable, but I cannot sell them at full price because of the minor damage to the stone. I would normally sell these to beginning silversmith and craftsman students to practice on. I'm no longer near any school so I thought I'd make these available for fun, for those who just want to use them in other projects.
In this batch, there are all heart cabochons. Some of the flaws can be covered by the wire wrapping or bezeling, etc.
All my cabochons are backed in hard, black epoxy for stability and strength.

The layers in these stones range from translucent to opaque for onyx. The stones vary in color, too. They may be white or gray, ranging to many colorful varieties. onyx stones usually contain flat-banded, white and brownish-red bands. Onyx is a gemstone with alternating light and dark bands, which are colored in brown, red, black, white and grey. From the stone history: The name onyx was used by the Romans for a variety of stones including alabaster, chalcedony, and what is now known as onyx marble. Roman soldiers wore onyx talismans engraved with heroes such as Hercules or Mars, God of war. They believed that the stone would make the wearer as brave and daring as the figured carved on it. During the Renaissance, onyx was believed to bring eloquence upon the wearer and was regarded with great value by public speakers and orators. Cameos are cut from stones, such as onyx or agate, where different colors occur in layers. The background material is cut away, leaving the cameo design in relief. Onyx is also used in intaglios because its layers can be cut to show a color contrast between the design and the background. onyx at one time was more precious than gold, silver, or sapphire. onyx is always widely used in cameos and intaglios.

Yes, I do custom orders! Click on the Custom Order Request link on the home page or in any one of my listings. I'll let you know if I have those stones. I have LOTS of inventory but not all of it is listed so it's very possible that I may already have what you are looking for.
With any custom request, please provide exact dimensions (length, width, thickness and shape). Pictures are encouraged and welcomed as it makes the custom cutting process much easier.
Yes, all my cabochons are american-made. A majority of my stones are mined in the American West--Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, etc. I cut all my stones in my home shop here in sunny Florida.
My stones are very sturdy. They are all backed with a hard black epoxy that increases their strength and stability, but they will crack and break if dropped on a hard surface such as tile or concrete. They are very tough when it comes to setting and bezeling them but don't play catch with them ;)
Yes, I can cut different shapes than those I have listed. Please click the Custom Order Rquest link on the home page or in any listing. Not everything is cuttable although I can generally make it work. I will let you know if I can do it and then give you an estimate on the project. For totally new shapes, there WILL be an additional "lapidary design fee" of $50 on the order. Sketches, drawings or pictures are encouraged. But exact dimensions are a must.
No, I do not do silversmithing. I do no bezel, inlay or solder silver or gold. But I do know many fine silversmiths who would like to help you with your silversmithing needs. Message me and will provide you with some names.
Yes! I have a huge inventory from years of stone cutting. Not all of it is posted in my store. Often I have more than one of the cabochons you are looking for.
Since we are dealing with natural rock they will not be exactly identical in color or matrix, but I can generally get pretty close. I do however have the same shapes in many different, stones colors and sizes.
If I don't have more in stock, I can generally cut what you want but for new cuttings I require a $60 minimum order.
Just click the Custom Order Request link, explain what you want with dimensions, stone type and look and I will give you a price quote.
Yes! I can make any of my stones into a pair of earrings or pendant. All of my shaped cabochons have this as an option for an extra fee.
If you wish to have a standard cabochon (square, oval, triangle, circle, etc.) made into jewelry, you would have to click the Custom Order Request button in the listing. I would then be able to give you a price quote.
Pair of earrings: Additional $25 (2 stones drilled with sterling silver eyehook, bail and french ear wires)
Pendant: Additional $15 (1 stone drilled with sterling silver eyehook and bail)
