4 rhyolite freeform cabochons

Sizes range between 29mm x 22m to 28mm x 19mm.
96 carats (combined weight)

These cabs are cut from rhyolite and they're vintage. I cut these in the early 80s and now I'm pulling them out for you! The stone is from Wonderstone Mountain Nevada

These stones are what I call "seconds" as they are left-overs from my jewelry making. They are all rhyolite but have one fracture running along the natural bands of the stone. In the natural light it is not seen. This does not affect the strength of the stone.

They are still usuable but I cannot sell them at full price because of the minor fracture to the stone. I would normally sell these to beginning silversmith and craftman students to practice on. I'm no longer near any school so I thought I'd make these available for fun, for those who just want to use them in other projects.

In this batch, there are oval freeform cabochons. Some of the flaws can be covered by the wire wrappers, bezeling, etc.

All my cabochons are backed in hard, black epoxy for stability and strength. If you'd like me to add an eyehook to each

cabochons, select the option above.

ROCKS FACTS:

RHYOLITE

Rhyolite is an Igneous Rock that is usually seen in light shades of gray, whites, pinks and light browns. It can however contain reasonably bright to dark shades of green, reds, browns and even black which gives nice patterns. At times the patterns looks much like drip patterns reminiscent of malachite. Other times it appears in flowing patterns much like various agates. Either way, simply tumbling rhyolite stones can create nice jewelry that keeps they eye moving throughout the piece.

Similar to granite but with a much smaller grain size, it is used for many of the same things granite is used for. It can be carved into statues and is often used in mixtures used in construction and roads. In recent years, it is becoming known as an inexpensive stone for use in jewelry.

It can be found in many places around the world where there has been volcanic activity in the past. When magma flows quickly out of a volcano, then flows in thick layers down the side of the cone, the layers cool quickly in the surrounding air. This creates either rock or volcanic glass. Rhyolite is one of the rocks that are formed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Custom and personalized orders

Yes, I do custom orders! Click on the Custom Order Request link on the home page or in any one of my listings. I'll let you know if I have those stones. I have LOTS of inventory but not all of it is listed so it's very possible that I may already have what you are looking for.

With any custom request, please provide exact dimensions (length, width, thickness and shape). Pictures are encouraged and welcomed as it makes the custom cutting process much easier.

Are you cabochons made in the USA?

Yes, all my cabochons are american-made. A majority of my stones are mined in the American West--Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, etc. I cut all my stones in my home shop here in sunny Florida.

Care instructions

My stones are very sturdy. They are all backed with a hard black epoxy that increases their strength and stability, but they will crack and break if dropped on a hard surface such as tile or concrete. They are very tough when it comes to setting and bezeling them but don't play catch with them ;)

Can I request a special shape?

Yes, I can cut different shapes than those I have listed. Please click the Custom Order Rquest link on the home page or in any listing. Not everything is cuttable although I can generally make it work. I will let you know if I can do it and then give you an estimate on the project. For totally new shapes, there WILL be an additional "lapidary design fee" of $50 on the order. Sketches, drawings or pictures are encouraged. But exact dimensions are a must.

Do you do silversmithing?

No, I do not do silversmithing. I do no bezel, inlay or solder silver or gold. But I do know many fine silversmiths who would like to help you with your silversmithing needs. Message me and will provide you with some names.

Do you have more of this cabochon or in a different size?

Yes! I have a huge inventory from years of stone cutting. Not all of it is posted in my store. Often I have more than one of the cabochons you are looking for.

Since we are dealing with natural rock they will not be exactly identical in color or matrix, but I can generally get pretty close. I do however have the same shapes in many different, stones colors and sizes.

If I don't have more in stock, I can generally cut what you want but for new cuttings I require a $60 minimum order.

Just click the Custom Order Request link, explain what you want with dimensions, stone type and look and I will give you a price quote.

Can I get an individual stone made into earrings, a necklace or pendant?

Yes! I can make any of my stones into a pair of earrings or pendant. All of my shaped cabochons have this as an option for an extra fee.

If you wish to have a standard cabochon (square, oval, triangle, circle, etc.) made into jewelry, you would have to click the Custom Order Request button in the listing. I would then be able to give you a price quote.

Pair of earrings: Additional $20 (2 stones drilled with sterling silver eyehook, bail and french ear wires)

Pendant: Additional $10 (1 stone drilled with sterling silver eyehook and bail)

Eyehook only: Additional $5 (1 stone drilled with sterling silver eyehook)
